Description
Manley Park Methodist Church will be celebrating 100 years of worship, mission and service in 2010.
The church was opened in 1910 after a congregation of Christians who met in an old brick building with a tin roof on the corner of Cromwell Avenue decided they needed a bigger place!
The church has had a rich history with others joining it as they have closed over the years.
In the 1950s it probably had its greatest numbers including a sunday school of over 200!
At that time there was a tradition of "May Queen" with procession and parade through the local streets.
Many church members from the West Indies joined in the 1960's and it remains a 'mixed' congregation to this day.
In the 1970s and 1980s the church was used as a basis for a unique experiment in Methodism when the role of Minister was given over to a team of students from the Methodist training College.
5 or 6 at any one time were 'the Minister' working under a tutor in the college.
Manley Park helped in the training of nearly 40 Ministers - most of whom are still practicing Ministers.
They are spread over the British Isles and some abroard. Many are at high level in the church .... one on Radio 4 last week.
This Centenary year in 2010 will include concerts and events to celebrate the past and to look forward to the future.
The church has set up a charitable fund, the "Centenary Fund" and is raising money for future projects in the church and with local groups.
The fund has raised its first £1000 already!
Our main morning worship on Sunday is at 10.30am.
Services follow the Methodist tradition including the singing of hymns (it is said our theology is in our singing) and last about an hour with refreshments and chat afterwards.
